Don and Anja Richards depart Africa for the Caribbean in a
Leopard 53 Power Catamaran
Kekada at Cape Town.
... Yes, having spent some time at Kruger National Park, we do agree that they roar, but luckily for us the Leopard purrs nicely, or in this case our new Leopard 53 Powercat, and what a boat she is.
As we got closer to the boat we saw the croc tracks going to the boat but not away from the boat. With oars on the ready we knew the croc had to be either in the boat or under it.
– The Dalmatian Coast Aboard Our Bali 4.1 –
Choosing which yacht to buy is not easy and catamarans are no exception to the rule. That’s why my wife and I decided to go to the La Grande Motte show in April 2017, as a first step, to see and compare the available models between 39’ and 42’ likely to suit us.

Outremer’s flagship 5x cruised into Sydney Harbour recently, the first of these 59-footers to reach here, so I jumped aboard for a sail, reports KEVIN GREEN.
“Am I going to die Dad, am I going to die?” This is what my partner’s 10-year-old daughter kept asking him as he carried her on his back as fast as he could over the rocks to the nearby dinghy. She had just been attacked by a two and a half metre salt water crocodile and he was trying to get her back to our cat Hard Yakka which was anchored two kilometres down the Sale river. This near disaster happened in October 2005 in the remote Kimberley area of Doubtful Bay. I had got off the boat in Broome and flew home to Ireland for my sister’s wedding. Ric, my partner, and his two kids Simon and Chantal, along with a friend Peter from Switzerland were sailing from Broome to Port Douglas hoping to be there by December 25. (I was flying back on Christmas Day).
– Reef Hopping - The Stuff of Dreams –
For many yachties, one of the most appealing aspects of the cruising lifestyle is sitting at anchor in a very beautiful and secluded spot, with nothing but the ocean surrounding you. A coral reef anchorage is the stuff of dreams and Christine Danger takes us to four of her favourites.

– Heavy Weather - How A Catamaran Survives –
Alex Stone provides pointers to storm seamanship in a catamaran after a difficult Tasman crossing.
The Tasman can throw it at you. And it did. On an eastbound crossing from Bundaberg to New Zealand we survived two gales and one intense storm. We sailed nearly 400nm without rudders. We sat at sea anchor for a total of eight nights. A weather window that should have been open – no less than six prediction systems assured us of it, two weeks of westerlies, none more than 25kts – well, that weather window had slammed shut. Decisively.
Tasman: (synonym) unpredictable, challenging, arduous.
– Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines –
Flying across Sydney Harbour at speeds approaching 40kts, the SailGP F50 foiling catamarans showcased the potential of this new regatta format, reports KEVIN GREEN.
A revolution in design from the industry leaders. Lagoon Catamarans have begun to reveal to the public some initial teasers of this long awaited development. TMG Managing Director John Cowpe commented “the project has been under wraps for a long time with thousands of development hours invested, as always Lagoon has had the best designers and interior experts on board throughout. This new 42 is seen to be leading the way in comfortable, ergonomically smart and easy sailing and we are excited to be showcasing a 42 at the 2016 Sydney International Boat Show.”

This project began with a call from the client enquiring about a 14m semi displacement alloy/composite (composite fly bridge) RHYD power cat that was for sale. He needed to confirm the overall dimensions as it was critical for fitting into their berth, the beam was about 50mm too wide, Murphy’s Law. They were very disappointed as the boat ticked most of the boxes for what they were looking for to take long range cruising holidays out of Perth, WA.
