As entries breach the century mark, Whitsunday Sailing Club (WSC) is pleased to announce that 74 Islands Distillery has signed up as Naming Rights Sponsor for 2025 Airlie Beach Race Week (ABRW), adding to excitement following the recent announcement of the Whitsundays and Townsville being selected as venues for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games Sailing Competition.

“A local artisan gin and vodka distillery on the Whitsunday coast, 74 Islands Distillery is one our club and competitors can relate to, so it’s a win-win situation for all concerned,” said ABRW Regatta Chairman, Terry Archer, who is also a regular competitor at Race Week, to be held from 7-14 August this year.

On the Olympic Sailing Competition heading their way, Archer said, “We could not be happier. This is an amazing opportunity that will have a major impact on our region. It will have massive benefits not only for sailing, but the whole community as a whole and we are looking forward to welcoming sailors from around the world, along with their families and friends.”

Whitsunday Sailing Club, which underwent major modifications in recent times, is ideally located. It has run major sailing events in the stunning Whitsundays for years, including its signature event, ABRW which garners up to 200 keelboats and off the beach boats annually. Competitors love the location and the fact that restaurants and accommodation are within walking distance or a five minute car ride away.

From this year (the 37th edition) on, the event will have a dual purpose, as the Club will use it to gauge all aspects of what will be required for the Olympics, with the eyes of the world no doubt tuning into the Whitsundays and all it has to offer.

Justin Van Stom is a Townsville local who will race his 11 Metre One Design named Calypso. Van Stom enjoys ABRW and SeaLink Magnetic Island Race Week and is looking at them with different eyes this year.

“How lucky are we be to living and sailing here with both places being Olympic worthy,” states Van Stom who comes from a family of sailors. They are such great places to sail and both have awesome venues. Can you imagine more brilliant places to train for the Olympics?

“Airlie Beach is such a beautiful venue. And Race Week is a fun, friendly event, has great competition and is a great testing ground, because you are up against the best from Australia.

“I’m a yacht broker, so the Olympics will also be good for my business. The fact that I will be there when the Sailing Competition at the Games is on is incredible. I’ll be putting my hat in the ring to help out in any way I can,” Van Stom said.

Andrew York (NSW) concurs. He has some incite when it comes sailing at the elite level and the venues chosen. A former Australian Laser champion and reigning Australian Sports Boat champion, York’s dad, Michael York, was selected to represent Australia at the 1968 Games in the 5.5 Metre class, but unable to get time off from work, the America’s and Admiral’s Cup sailor was replaced by Sir James Hardy.

“I think the Bay (Pioneer) is a very good venue. You could run half a dozen courses there. Airlie already has two marinas, the Club is friendly, and it’s a great place to sail,” says York, who offers this tip: “A guy I ocean raced with has a 16-year-old son, Healy Ryan. He’s an ILCA7 sailor and he’s my pick for selection to the 2032 Games- so yes, I have a vested interest.”

Of ABRW, York, who will race his Reo 8.5, Like Oxygen, says, “I enjoy it because it’s where all the sports boats go to race. It’s an anticipated event for all of us (there are 15 entered so far, with more to come). The get-together at the end of every day is fun. I’ve been a regular competitor there for years. In fact, I like Airlie so much, I bought a place up there!”

Disappointment for Australia as they pay the price from a penalty in the start box in the Final

SYDNEY - 9 February, 2025: Emirates Great Britain has caused an upset at the KPMG Australia Sail Grand Prix | Sydney today, knocking the favoured Australian team off the top step in the Final on Sydney’s iconic Harbour.

Tom Slingsby’s Australia Team were served a penalty in the start box of the Final by umpires, sending them to the back as Dylan Fletcher’s Emirates Great Britain and Giles Scott’s Canada fought for the honours ahead. “Personally, it’s massive when you know Sydney is where SailGP started in 2019 and where I started my journey, so to come back here and win is amazing. I’m just really proud of the whole team and how they’ve included me in it when I’ve obviously been learning a lot and making a lot of mistakes so I think there’s more to come.” Fletcher said, speaking about his team’s win.

Australia’s custom superyacht builder Echo Yachts has commenced construction of their latest creation, the ASC57, at their superyacht building facility in the Australian Marine Complex, Western Australia. This groundbreaking project brings together industry leaders from across the globe. In partnership with renowned Dutch sailing yacht designers Dykstra Naval Architects and Australia’s leading aluminium multihull experts One2Three Naval Architects, Echo Yachts will deliver the world’s largest sailing catamaran to date.

Drawing inspiration from Echo Yachts’ 2023 newbuild motor yacht M/Y Charley 2, the ASC57 sailing yacht will feature similar luxury accommodation, a vast array of water toys, and helicopter landing capabilities.

However, this superyacht introduces a twin-Dynarig sail system by Southern Spars, paired with Dykstra’s sleek and refined sailing yacht aesthetics. As a result of the addition of sail power, a regenerative power system will be installed, utilising twin shaft generators and a battery storage system to allow for silent running under sail. With a CPP driveline, this system also allows the vessel to utilise the main engines without the need to run separate generators to power the vessel more efficiently when motoring.

With its hydrodynamic efficient aluminium hulls, full sail-powered propulsion, power regeneration and deployment options, the ASC57 offers significant eco-friendly performance advantages and greener modes of operation compared to traditional motor yachts.

Project Overview:

Echo Yachts are teamed with two renowned sailing and aluminium multihull design firms to deliver the ASC57 project. An extremely efficient aluminium hull form is complemented by twin Dynarigs providing a total sail area of some 1660 m2 for eco-efficient long range cruising. Weight reduction, simplicity and ease of operation will further characterize this project.

The renowned Dykstra Naval Architects, of Amsterdam in The Netherlands, are providing the yacht’s exterior styling, layout and naval architecture, with an enviable list of project credentials including their iconic sailing yacht projects such as S/Y Black Pearl and S/Y Hetairos. Detailed naval architecture and structural design are being performed by Australian firm One2Three Naval Architects, the same aluminium and multihull design experts responsible for the Naval Architecture of the international award winning 84m aluminium trimaran superyacht M/Y White Rabbit delivered in 2018, and 56m catamaran superyacht M/Y Charley 2 delivered in 2023.

Entries for Ocean Dynamics and Mount Gay Airlie Beach Race Week 2024 continue to grow and among the latest, with two boats in the running, is local Michel Van Der Zwaard, whose two kids have been added to one of his boats for the 36th running of Airlie Beach Race Week, to be held from 8-15 August.

Van Der Zwaard’s daughters, Grace (10) and Mia (7), along with older school girls Jazz and Demi, are among the crew on his MC38 Black Jack 38. The boat, formerly owned by Peter Harburg, is entered in the Performance Racing Division.

The ILIAD 53F – voted Multihull of the Year - will be on display at the Sydney International Boat Show.

The ILIAD 53F, winner of the 2024 Multihull of the Year award, will be a major drawcard for visitors to the 2024 Sydney International Boat Show from 1 – 4 August.

ILIAD Catamarans will be showcasing the highly acclaimed long-range power catamaran in Darling Harbour with inspection bookings now available.

The ILIAD 53F has been enthusiastically embraced by international powercat buyers who appreciate its remarkable range, huge living spaces and extraordinary quality of finish. The model enjoyed its US debut at the 2024 Miami International Boat Show in February where it was immediately sold.

The luxurious power catamaran features one of the highest bridgedeck clearances in her market segment, with a high freeboard to deliver comfortable cruising in challenging offshore conditions.

Distinguished by her outstanding interior living space, including a generous forward lounge, internal helm station and dining for 6-8 people, the ILIAD 53F has panoramic windows delivering natural light and superb views from every angle. Equipped with the finest European appliances, the galley is designed for stylish entertaining, and her expansive benches, full-size refrigerator and freezer, and remarkable storage make her ideal for extended cruising adventures.

Accommodation onboard is spacious and beautifully designed with the master suite encompassing an entire hull and featuring an oversized island queen bed, panoramic windows, generous headroom and large ensuite.

The ILIAD 53F boasts exceptional outdoor space for entertaining and relaxing, and the cockpit features a bar area and dining setting for up to ten guests. The tender platform is ideal for safe sea access when swimming or diving and makes a superb sunbathing spot when the tender is deployed.

The ILIAD 53F is powered by 440hp Volvo or Yanmar engines (Cummins optional) delivering a top speed of 21 knots (lightship), and cruising long range at low speeds will afford more than 2,500 nautical miles.
